Ridgeland, Mississippi is a small town in Lee County, Mississippi. The population was 511 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The Ridgeland community began as a small farming village in 1882 on the edge of present-day Ridgeland. The name "Ridgeland" came from a Cherokee word meaning "place where water risks no danger." By 1900, most of the original people had died from yellow fever or other causes and the village dwindled to just 12 residents. But in 1915, when Cottonseed oil production began operations in nearby Gulfport, an influx of young men and women who were looking for work moved into Ridgeland and its neighboring villages. By 1920, Ridgeland had grown to 680 residents and became known as one of Gulfport's major industrial centers. During World War II, Ridgeland was host to mobile airfields used by U.SAAF pilots flying strategic bombers over Japan; during peacetime it was home to two schools and a library organized by local churches. In 1951, heavy industry ended with the closure of Gulfport's oil refineries; after that period there wasn't much economic activity until more recent years when manufacturing jobs have returned with companies such as Ford Motor Company taking advantage of Ridgeland's proximity to both Jackson and Hattiesburg
