Ridgeland, Mississippi is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. It was founded in 1837 by John Ridgeland and his family. The Ridgeland Post Office was established in 1839. The first courthouse in Ridgeland was built in 1850. In 1863, the Confederate army attacked and burned the town. The Union army arrived too late to save it. After the war, Ridgeland became a cotton plantation society with large slaveholders and their slaves living together on large estates surrounded by plantations of their own. In 1824, one of Ridge's sons founded the village of Ripley which grew to be one of Mississippi's largest towns before it was destroyed by a fire in 1868. In 1881, Ridgeland becoming the seat for Hancock County after it was chosen by a referendum over Jackson. The history of Ridgeland begins with its location on high ground overlooking both confluence points of the Red and Yazoo Rivers. There were many natural resources available here including timber, coal, oil shale and clay that were exploited early settlers used these resources to build their homes and businesses. today there are several museums located within or close to Ridgeland including: Ridgeland Museum; Hancock County Historical Society; Mississippian-Hancock Community College; Ripley Museum; Jackson State University - Agricultural Experiment Station & Research Facility; Asbury Park String Band Convention Center Today Ridgeland remains an important center for economic development as well as cultural events such as music festivals and symphony orchestras concerts that draw people from all over Mississippi and Tennessee

With its location on Interstate 85 close to major marketplaces across America, cotton exports continued to be an important industry until around 1940 when production peaked and ceased entirely due to declines in global demand for raw materials sourced from developing countries such as India and China. In response to this decline, over time many smaller businesses were born out of necessity - some started out selling goods they couldn't produce themselves (like eggs) while others sprung up that serviced larger companies (like plumbing services). By 2000 however, there were only a few original commercial tenants remaining within what had become known collectively as The Cotton Belt - all but one closed by 2005 having lost money despite having high occupancy rates among residents who still relied on agriculture-based income sources for support.
