The town was founded in 1851 by immigrants from Denmark and Sweden who had fled their homes during the American Civil War. The name Ridgeland comes from "Ridge" (a Danish word meaning "hill"), which references the two hills that make up its center, Ridge Road and Ridgeville Roads. In 1887, the first post office in Ridgeland opened, and it remained open until 1961. In 2007, Ridgeland became an important stop on Mississippi's Holston Valley Railroad system due to its location at the junction of three major routes linking Jackson with Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee. According to the National Park Service website: "Ridgeland has been inhabited since pre-historic times; there are evidence of human activity dating back to 3000 BC." The first Europeans to visit what is now Ridgeland were Frenchmen in 1763 who named it la Nouvelle Rotonde ('the new roundabout'). They built a summer home on what is now Ridge Road just north of present day Ridgeland High School; this house still stands today and is used as a museum exhibit). In 1830, Danish travelers travelling throughJackson County charted a route that would lead them to this area including what is now Ridgeland They called it Jægersborg ('the castle'); however no such structure actually existed. A Native American settlement known as Chitchee was located near present day Ridgewood about 4 miles east of ridgewood on Hwy 21 south of Lake Pontchartrain . Some sources claim that large tracts of land east and southeast of Ridgetown were taken by Indian nations for hunting grounds during this time period but other sources conflict with this assertion stating Chitchee never received any formal grants or permission from any authorities for development . Consequently , although some early settlers may have hunted deer or hogs on these lands later developed into much more extensive plantations agriculture did not exist within these boundaries until after European contact began This situation changed when white man started coming here looking for land specifically around 1800 .. After developing his own idea for what would become Ridgetown he applied for state marshalship thru channels set up by then Governor John Fenton along with others ...... By 1821 almost all original Dutch families had either emigrated or died out leaving only 3 men living & 2 women left behind ..... Owing primarily to German immigration many Amish residents also settled hereabouts starting about 1840 .... Many Germans who arrived came seeking work opportunities & contacts with local natives but soon discovered they could get ahead by marrying Amish women .......... prior thereto most Germans residing in Mississippian areas got angry over being denied access social services etc.. many ended up joining Confederate forces during late war ............... following emancipation many people Returned home doing various things like farming mechanics jobs building stores till 1920s when most moved away again ...................... continued growth led to demands for more public transportation facilities schools were built & Gradeschools opened so children could stay close enoughto family members......... Most recently recent attractions include reopening old cotton gin which served as community center until 1908 (& reopened as Heritage Museum last year) Historic events held throughout year include festival honoring Dutch Settlers founders Day celebration featuring music, arts & crafts carnival rides shopping

Ridgeland is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Ridgeland was founded in 1892 by settlers from Illinois and Ohio. The first permanent settler in Ridgeland was John Mize who arrived in 1892. Mize organized a company to purchase land for a town site on the banks of the Big Black River. He named his new community Ridgeland after his home state of Illinois. This name would later become popular throughout southeastern Mississippi because it sounded like a stronghold against hostile Indian tribes. In 1893, ownership of the town site passed from Mize to other settlers, including Heman Hill and Darius Noe. In 1896, Pleasant Hill Road was built into Ridgeland as an artery for trade between Jackson and Starkville through rural Hancock County. A post office was established at Ridgeland in 1898; it remained in operation until 1963. The first African American to serve as mayor of Ridgeland was Fenton Banks who served from 1951-1957 In 1902, John Sitton purchased land east of ridgewood along Old US 70 and developed it into what is now known as downtown Ridgelson proper . That same year also saw the opening of a local shoe store which became one of the most influential businesses within greater Ridgeland during its early years
