Ridgeland, Mississippi is an unincorporated community in Stark County, Mississippi. It is located on the banks of the Anacostia River. The population was 948 at the 2010 census. Ridgeland has a post office with ZIP code 73536. The name Ridgeland was given to the community by George Washington Carver, who settled there in 1881. At that time, it consisted of only a few homes and a few acres of land. In 1882, Carver donated land to the town for school purposes. By 1903, Ridgeland had a store and two churches. The first church was built by Rev. Jno Crain and dedicated on December 12th of that year; it remains in use today as the Methodist Church of Ridgeland. In 1907, US Highway 27 (US 27) went through Ridgeland and made it an important link between Jackson and Memphis; thus making Ridgeland one of those towns directly affected by the great highway construction project during that era. The community grew rapidly during this period as businesses started up all around town to take advantage of highway access and growth opportunities! In 1951, when Interstate 40 bypassed Stark County entirely, most residents decided to leave their beloved Ridgeland behind for good – however some nostalgic souls continued living there until they too were displaced by Interstate 40 traffic in the early 1960s! Today only a few small houses remain standing along State Road 107A south of town (near where I-40 meets US 27). Since its inception as an unincorporated community within Stark County back in 1905 (thankfully before any interstate highways came through), Ridgeland has seen significant changes both literally and figuratively over time! even tho’ much has changed since then – many residents still keep close ties with their hometown despite moving away for various reasons… some because they love what they have here – others simply cannot resist living near such beautiful scenery!
