Ridgeland was founded in 1868 by white men on land donated by the Chickasaw Nation. The town was named for General John C. "Black Jack" Ridgeway, who served as an American general during World War II and later became a U.S. Senator from Mississippi. The first permanent settler in Ridgeland was Aiken Hickson in 1868; he built a cabin on Blackwater Creek andnamed the settlement after himself and his family's home state of Georgia (now Alabama). Hickson's cabin still stands today near the corner of US-4 and State Highway 12B (the present day city limits). In 1870, Captain John Waddell arrived with his party from Mobile Bay to survey what would become Ridgeland Township. He named it for General John C. "Black Jack" Ridgeway, who had fought in the American Civil War as a colonel under General Ulysses S. Grant and then served as Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln before becoming a U.S. Senator from Mississippi between 1944 and 1956 Waddell also donated land to the community which extended along FM 3010 south to Old Indian Trail Road east of town center In 1872, Methodist preacher Isaac Hawkins established a mission station near where Church Street intersects New Market Road Hawkins' mission remains active today as First Christian Church located at 900 Church Street . In 1875–76 James Henschel platted out section 2/3 of what would become Ridgeland Township including present day Ridgeland . Henschel named it Mission Hill after his Methodist church complex located adjacent to present day Main Street . After much discussion among local settlers about name options for their new township, it was decided that ridgeland would be its official name In 1885–86 Aiken Hickson sold some property adjoining Mission Hill to Elisha Haskell . Haskell renamed it Hatch runnestead after his wife Eliza Jane Hatch whom he married in 1881 . By this time many residents had moved away from Ridgeline because of competition from nearby Jackson (then known only as Meridian) for jobs and political influence within Congress ; however , over time Hatch Runningseased competition by developing more agriculturally based businesses than Jacksonians did Hatch ran unsuccessfully for office several times but managed to keep alive interest in his township until its closure following World War II when all former Reserves were turned over toJacksonian control

The name Ridgeland has been used for many places in Mississippi since the early 1800s. The first place named Ridgeland was laid out by surveyors in 1821. It was originally called Allendale and then Poplar Bluff. In 1834, it became known as Ridgeland after General Andrew Jackson's Battle of Hundert miles west of present-day Ridgeland in what is now Stark County. The first post office in Ridgeland was established on December 12, 1836; and the first store built there was on February 6th of that year. In 1840, the route from Greenville to Meridian ran through Ridgeland and several other towns before reaching Memphis; so business at Ridgeland grew slowly until about 1850 when a stage line arrived here from Memphis and started carrying goods back and forth between this city and Vicksburg daily. About 1860 a cotton gin began operations here; but it did not reach its current size until1868 when an addition to the structure increased production by 50%. After being founded by Methodist Episcopal missionaries in 1865 as Hope Valley Missionary Baptist Church (later renamed First African American Baptist church), Ridgelson had one pastor per month during its brief existence up to 1870 before Dr. John Broughton assumed oversight with regularity thereafter In 1886–87 school board member Sallie Mae Holmes organized a group of women who taught school 1½ hours each day outside their homes without pay while their husbands worked inside plantations Some important events associated with this period include: Mrs Holmes inviting Booker T Washington to speak at her churchsponsored picnic; Mr Washington giving his address on behalf of black Mississippians dwelling outside white society at Springhill Convention Center near Jackson Also significant were Haley Johnson’s efforts to get state government recognition for all black citizens living within its limits regardless of degree or educational attainment; Wilson’s victory over Sumter governor Robert Mays at Chickasaw Battlefield – effectively ending Reconstruction In 1918 Wm Gentry became superintendent ; he modernized education including implemented more scientific methods than ever seen before in Mississippi schools This led to increased enrollment which generated new taxes which helped fund public works projects like road construction By 1930 most residents self-identified as “ Negroes” rather than “Mennonites” or “Lutherans” because they felt integration would mean relinquishing cultural values some found objectionable such as head coverings Ridgeland experienced great growth following World War II due mainly to agricultural production especially DDT use on corn fields ; however racial tension continued throughout the 1960s culminating with fatal rioting that occurred on August 5th 1966 resulting in the death of four people . Economic decline followed soon afterwards due mostly to military hardware procurement contracts brought about by desegregation plans ; nevertheless some community members continue working locally despite these challenges During recent years there have been efforts made by community members including Mayor Melvin Reese along with volunteers/memberships groups like Noonday Citizens Committee formed specifically for this purpose
