Ridgeland was founded in 1871 by white settlers and named for General J.A. Ridgeway, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. minister to Mexico City. The town grew rapidly after it was made an incorporated community in 1903 and became known for its cotton plantations and large slave trade from Mississippi until 1865 when slavery was abolished throughout America. In 1875 Ridgeland voted to become a state capital but it remained unincorporated until 1907 when it was incorporated as the city of Ridgeland with its own government and mayoralty. Ridgeland is located on the banks of the Yazoo River at (33 degrees 05' 24" N, 90 degrees 49' 31" W). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 5,332 people residing in Ridgeland Township: 2,873 households (69% black or African American), 1,553 families (31% black or African American), and 442 non-families (12% white or Caucasian). The racial makeup of Bridgnorth Township had 9% Hispanic/Latino residents while only 2%. There are no schools within Ridgeland Township; students must attend school in Jackson which has much more resources available to them than ridgeland township does
