The first European to reach Ridgeland was Captain James Cook on his HMS Resolution in 1795. He named it after Sir John Chilton's estate in Yorkshire, England which he had visited earlier that year. In 1818, Rear Admiral Samuel Barron founded the town of Ridgeland on land donated by Barron's father-in-law and friend Isaac Watts. In 1892, General Andrew Jackson delivered an address in Ridgeland celebrating the centennial of Mississippi's admission into the Union as a state. Jackson said: "When I am gone this country will be filled with men who have done something for MissisipPI" In 1907, Jesse Owens won the gold medal at the Olympics in Rome while running for Texas A&M University (now Baylor University). After his win Owens moved to Ridgeland and started his own athletic equipment manufacturing business called Jesse Owens Enterprises Incorporated.
