Ridgeland, Mississippi is home to the world's second largest concentration of firearms storage and carriage museums. The city was founded in 1881 by planters who moved from Nashville, Tennessee. In 1916, Ridgeland became a law enforcement center for the state of Mississippi when it was created as a result of the consolidation of several counties. Firearms storage and carriage museums have been located in Ridgeland since at least 1919. The first firearm t-shirt museum in Ridgeland was established in 1919 by J.D. Griffiths and his associates with the goal of displaying "the latest products from around the world with an American feel." The Museum of Firearms exhibited original rifles, shotguns, pistols, revolvers, ammunition and more than 2,000 artifacts. After years of operation, the Museum closed its doors in 1974 but has been reborn as the Jackson County Sheriff's Historical Center which features exhibits on local law enforcement history and culture throughout Jackson County. Ridgeland is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,000 at the 2010 census. Ridgeland was founded by white men in 1851 as a community on the banks of the Mississippi River. It became an important cotton and rice center in the early 20th century. The community was destroyed by a tornado on May 15, 1907, which killed almost all of its inhabitants. The town has been rebuilt numerous times and currently has a population of around 10,000 people. Ridgeland is located just east of Jackson and north of Hattiesburg. It has several small towns surrounding it including Pascagoula and Westpointe. The name Ridgeland comes from "ridgelands" or "ridges" that rise along the riverbank. Ridgeland first came into being when white men decided to settle near the mouth of theMississippi River in what is now Jackson County after finding land there had not been claimed by other groups for fear that they would compete with them for resources such as water and timber. In 1851, James Dickey established himself about two miles west of present-day Ridgeland on high ground overlooking both riverside cotton fields and open prairies where he began to build his home called "Dickey's Landing." Other early settlers included Andrew Belknap who arrived in 1853; John Brownell arriving in 1855; James Hennesy arriving about 1860; Ebenezer Horton coming about 1865; George Fenton arriving about 1870; Wm Crain arrival about 1880; Willis Suggs arrive about 1890 . By 1900, some 3,000 people lived in what is now Ridgeland proper while another 4500-7000 lived scattered throughout rural areas adjacent to it including Pascagoula (founded 1799), Westpointe (founded 1800), Hattiesburg (founded 1837), Yazoo City (founded 1854), Clarksdale ( founded 1888) and Meridian (established 1903).Many notable businesses operated within this growing town during its earliest years including Jardine Brothers Auctioneers & Mercers store which opened on November 1st 1830 serving as one ofthe first retail establishments west of Mobile Bayou.; Mr John Thomas Booty built his sawmill directly across frompresent day Storefront Drive opposite School Beaumont Elementary Schoolhouse Number 2 on Spring Street soon thereafter becoming known as ;Mr J T Booty Warehouse second only to original Mister boots store until chains took over beginning late 1960s local businesses generally closed during economic hard times although many continued operation through transformation into new formats such as internet based enterprises etc.. Post office service began operations October 17th1896 inside current Daymark Supermarket building also served as post office until 1969 when move moved to new facilities adjacent Old Courthouse Square next door where still operates today
