In 1902, Lafayette Petroleum Company drilled a well near present-day Ridgeland for oil shale production and developed what would become known as Lafayette Station (later renamed Ridgeland). The company built several stores and residences in what are now downtown Ridgeland before selling its interest in Lafayette Station in 1907 to J&L Railroad Co., which operated it until 1971 when it became part of Gulfport Lines LLC. Ridgeland's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its founding; today about 60% Of residents are employed within farming or related industries such as fishing, logging and manufacturing

In 1922, Ridgeland voters chose to become part of the newly formed city of Jackson Heights by referendum; Jackson Heights would be incorporated as a separate municipality in 1924. The neighboring towns of Greenville and Greenwood became independent municipalities within Ridgeland during this time period; both communities retained their own governing bodies until they were annexed into Jackson Heights in 1974. During World War II, Ridgeland served as an important military base where American troops stored munitions before redeploying back to America. In 1944, Hurricane Hattie struck southeastern Mississippi causing extensive damage and loss of life; Ridgeland experienced some damage but no fatalities. After years of growth and development, Ridgeland reached its peak population size around 2000 when over 15% of Warren County's residents lived there classified as high-income earners by Census Bureau numbers; however that number has decreased since then due to various factors such as suburbanization and other economic changes within Warren County overall. A number of businesses have closed down or relocated within Ridgeland due to competition from neighboring cities such as Tupelo or Brookhaven; however many people continue to live there permanently or until they can find another job or house somewhere else in Mississippi.
