Picayune is a town in Yazoo County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Troy-Daniels Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot on what is now Picayune Island was French explorer and trader Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville on November 5, 1814. He named it "Isle aux Moutons" (Mutton Isle). In 1819, Spanish traders César Chávez and José Miguel Larrain also landed in Picayune and established a small Fort Chávez there. In 1836, the Indian agent Manuel Micheaux granted land to Nicholas Brady for $3 per acre. Brady built a log cabin and began to grow corn. This led to the name of Picayune being given to the community by white settlers in 1840 as an act of friendship towards Brady. In 1851, John Sitton bought from resident James Cook some land including present-day Picayune from Nicholas Brady for $4 per acre. Cook had been forced out of his home by slaveowners with orders to move away fromthe state capital Jackson because Jackson was then under construction near Baton Rouge; he thought that Mobile would be more accommodating than Jackson and he desired a free home within easy reach of his family's plantations near Natchez in northwestern Louisiana Territory United States

The history of Picayune, Mississippi is a rich and complex one. The town was founded in 1836 by the brothers Gideon and Solomon Beauregard as a cotton plantation outpost on the banks of the Mississippi River. It quickly became an important center for slave trade and cotton production, and within a few years had become one of the most populous towns in Mississippi. Picayune's population rapidly grew during its early days, reaching 1,500 by 1840. But it soon succumbed to factors outside its control: disease, poverty, crop failures, and戦争 between Confederate forces and Union troops. In 1865, following the end of the American Civil War, Picayune was abandoned by its residents and lay fallow until 1875 when it was purchased from local farmers by New Orleans businessmen George Foster Peabody and Elias Howe Peabody for $10 million. Peabody immediately began developing Picayune into an effective commercial center with riverfront warehouses that functioned as bonded warehouse facilities for pork products (the town's first manufacturing sector), oilseed crops (to supplant corn), lumber (for construction projects around New Orleans), new housing developments (including 3 blocks of Art Deco-style "flats"), a library/museum/ souvenir shop/tavern/variety store/, three hospitals/wards (/each with 10 beds) for mental patients / inmates / indigent white people living below stairs in unheated jails etc., twoanking cinemas (=pictures showings at small theaters) viz One at Howland Avenue near Market Street (opened in 1911), another on Bigge Street side opposite State Capitol building etc., theatrical performances (=on stages) throughout 1916 thru 1918; also large number of stores opened everyday businesses such as bakery ovens & grills repairmenJosephine Baker automobile dealership/, grocers including W J White merchants meat market wagon load groceries etc.; post office established on Main Street in 1913; school district formed which included all areas east of Jackson County line except rural areas In spite of these difficulties picayune slowly regained some lost ground during prohibition era but physical decline followed social transformation which brought Negroes into white society gradually losing their self-reliance which led to crime rate increasing although progress has been made recently through corrective measures like initiatives like Job Corps program
In 1892, Picayune was founded as the first town in Mississippi. It grew rapidly and by 1900, it had a population of over 1000 people. The city was named after French explorer and trader Jean-Baptiste La Salle who discovered the area in 1795.
