Picayune is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi and the county seat of Marshall County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 43,641. The town was founded in 1819 by Frenchmen on the Yazoo River as a fur trading post. It became an American settlement in 1830 and was named for General James Wilkinson, who had been commandant of Fort Jackson in South Carolina during the American Revolution. In 1845, Picayunewas incorporated as a city with a population of 1008 residents; it grew rapidly to become one of Mississippi's largest cities with over 24,000 residents by 1860. In 1868 it became part of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania before becoming an independent city once again in 1932; at its peakPicayune had over 60,000 residents and was home to two universities (University of Mississippi and Southern Illinois University Carbondale). However, following World War II Picayune lost much manufacturing jobs due to desegregation within the United States; today only some light industrial production remains here outside of small businesses run by descendants of original settlers
