In response to Confederate atrocities including burning homes and murders of white men at Sayreville plantation near Lafayette, Louisiana (now Memphis), Union troops burned much of eastern Jackson County during their occupation which destroyed manyٰ dwellings, farms and plantations yielding an estimated 5800 acres (2255 hectares) total destruction valued at $5 million dollars ($ Today: approximately $276 million).
