It was not until 1821 when it lost its status as a part of US territory when the Missouri Compromise granted statehood to Mississippi. A post office called Picayune was established in 1812, but no mail ever arrived there because there was no road between Troup and Marshall counties! In 1827, an act of Congress designated Picayune as the seat of government for Hancock County; this act also provided for a courthouse and jail which were built soon afterwards on State Street in downtown Picayune. For many years prior to this time cells had been used by sheriff's deputies as jails because there were no proper jails located anywhere else in Hancock County at that time!
