The post office closed at this time but mail continued to be delivered via rider on horseback until 1912 when a new building was erected which allowed for regular mail delivery by car from Jackson to Picayune. The collapse of the industry during World War I caused heavy economic losses for local businesses. However, due to wartime production shortagesPicayune did not go into bankruptcy like many other small towns throughout Mississippi; instead its residents managed to turn their experiences into successful business ventures that survived until after World War II when agricultural production resumed statewide and picnics again became popular tourist attractions
In 1821, Picayune was founded by Frenchmen Jacques and Marguerite de la Motte. The couple named their town after the river on which it was located, the Mississippi. The town quickly became a major center of commerce, with a fleet of boats transporting goods up and down the Mississippi River. Picayune's heyday came during the early 1850s when cotton production in the area increased significantly. However, by 1860, Picayune had fallen victim to economic depression and began to decline. It only regained its importance as a commercial center after Union forces destroyed most of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's artillery at Fort Sumter in 1865. Today, Picayune is home to a small community of around 100 people and is best known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration that takes place in October.
