In 1875, Picayune hosted one of the first national holiday celebrations - Christmas Day - when all fifty U.S. states participated in what is now known as National Commemoration Day. Many pioneers who founded Picayune settled there because they could not find work elsewhere during Reconstruction times due to stringent new labor laws passed at that time caused by Unionist anger over former Confederate President Jefferson Davis's (later president Ulysses S Grant) success in getting those same laws passed while he was still behind bars following his surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 moments before General Robert E Lee surrendered control of southern Virginia to Ulysses S Grant at Appomattox Court Housegrounds

In 1881,Picayune became an incorporated town after voters approved a charter amendment that authorized it to do so. During World War II, Picayune played an important role in the war effort by providing food and munitions to troops stationed along the Gulf Coast.
