After Reconstruction ended in America in 1865 following the American Civil War, Picayune experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location on two major railroad lines -the Memphis and Atlantic Railroad and the Gulf and Mobile Railroad-. In 1875, Picayune hosted one of the first national holiday celebrations - Christmas Day - when all fifty U.S. states participated in what is now known as National Commemoration Day. Many pioneers who founded Picayune settled there because they could not find work elsewhere during Reconstruction times due to stringent new labor laws passed at that time caused by Unionist anger over former Confederate President Jefferson Davis's (later president Ulysses S Grant) success in getting those same laws passed while he was still behind bars following his surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 moments before General Robert E Lee surrendered control of southern Virginia to Ulysses S Grant at Appomattox Court Housegrounds
