When they reached the area around present-day Picayune, they discovered an excellent site for a new settlement due to its strategic location between two rivers and its availability of water resources. Jackson ordered the construction of a small fort at Picayune and named it Fort Pickens after his personal friend, Colonel James Pickett. The fort served as a military checkpoint on the route between Baton Rouge and Natchez until 1839 when it was abandoned due to lack of supplies and cannon fodder. After that point, Fort Pickens saw only minimal use until it wasclosed down in 1865 by order of General Ulysses S Grant following the American Civil War. In 1835-1836, Major Thomas Gist posted soldiers at Fort Pickens to protect settlers who had been migrating from Arkansas into Wilkinson County through what is now called Old Spanish Trail Road (now I-10). At first these settlers were very excited about this opportunity as their fears about being attacked by Indian raiders had all but disappeared since peace had returned to the region after years of conflict with Native Americans. However, within weeks of Gist's arrival there were reports of local Indians raiding livestock nearFort Pickens which caused many people in PicAYUNE TO SELL ALL OF THEIR LAND AND MOVING INTO THE FORT FORT GAILES AREA WHERE THEY CONTINUED TO LIVE UNTIL AFTER THE CIVIL WAR IN 1865 WHEN GENERAL JOHN PEMBERTON SET UP HIS MILITARY BASE HEREFOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ERA AND REDEEMING OF MISSISSIPPI SO THAT IT WAS TOWARD BLACK HISTORY
