Picayune is a town in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first white settler in Picayune was John Bogue in 1855. He built a cabin on the bank of the Pearl River and named it "Bogue's Landing." He also developed a corn crop and raised chickens. In 1859, Bogue married Sarah Cuthbert, who came from Vicksburg. They had six children: John (1860-1946), William (1863-1941), Julia (1865-1947), Anna (1867-1945), and Louise (1870-1963). In 1861, Isaac Newton moved to Picayune from Yazoo City with his family and began trading goods he had brought overland for cotton. By 1865, Newton had bought out Bogue's interest in the cabin and renamed it "Newton's Landing." He started an orchard, built a log home, and began to sell fried pork chops at $1 each until he went bankrupt in 1868. A group of men led by Jno Childress formed the Republican Party of Mississippi in 1870 while they were organizing their state party mechanics committee that would be responsible for electing members to state constitutional conventions throughout Mississippi during Reconstruction. They decided to name their newly created party "Picayune" after one of their local leaders—John Brownlee—whom they admired for his militancy against slavery despite being born into slaveholding society. Childress served as chairman of Picayune’s first town meeting on October 1st 1870 where he appointed twelve citizens to form a city commission which would manage all aspects of city government including taxation; water Supply; Streets; Parks; etcetera under direction from Mayor Childress whose term expired December 31st 1870 without having accomplished any tasks set for him by the Town Commission.
