Picayune is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,827. The name came from French and Spanish settlers who named it after San Juan de la Frontera, New Mexico. Picayune is located on the Yazoo River in Jackson County, about 30 miles (48 km) east of Memphis and about 60 miles (96 km) south of Jackson. The history of Picayune goes back to 1819 when General Andrew Jackson's forces burned down what is now downtown Picayune as part of their campaign against Mexico City during the Mexican–American War. When Spain claimed Texas in 1846, they ceded Louisiana to America - which included Picayune - as part of that territory's purchase price. In 1853,picayuners founded a small town called Jena on the east bank of the Yazoo River because there was no store or post office in that area at that time. In 1881, a group of white men led by W A Hogg established an agricultural colony called Redemption Land near present-day Starkville with hopes of developing it into a plantation society for black Americans willing to sell their land and labor to white capitalists for cash advances on credit without any interest payable. The colony failed because few blacks chose to sell their land; most either remained living in poverty or fled before expiration of their contracts or then revolted when those same riches were eventually withdrawn from them without explanation or compensation. In 1865, Confederate troops burned down downtown Jena while stores were being looted; this event helped spur development along what is now Elm Street between Main and US 75/92 just northwest of downtown Jena/Picayune junction - including several new businesses such as a grocery store and restaurant opening up soon thereafter followed by more housing developments beginning around 1905-10s taking place near Elm Street and surrounding lots including one known as "The White House" later becoming known as "The Plantation". During World War I, ammunition was vital to artillery units on both sides. The war resulted in more than 26 million casualties, making it one of history’s deadliest conflicts. Ammunition was also used extensively during World War II to support Operation Overlord, Allied efforts to liberate Europe from Nazi Germany. The first ammunition was created in 1792 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French engineer and artilleryman. The powder used at the time was blackpowder, which required a lot of labor to produce a round that could be fired. English gunners had learned about this early on, so they began using cannon rounds that were made of lead or bronze, which allowed them to fire more easily and with greater range than traditional blackpowder rounds. This led to the development of cannons that could use more powerful firearms round instead of just smaller caliber pistols.
Picayune is a town located in Jackson, Mississippi. It was founded in 1836 by Frenchmen who had come to the area for business purposes. The town grew quickly and soon became an important center for cotton cultivation and trade. In 1847, Picayune acquired its own post office and began to grow rapidly as a commercial center. By 1861, Picayune had become an important city in the region. In 1870, the Union Army destroyed much of Picayune during their siege of Jackson, leaving the town almost deserted. But within a few years, new residents had returned and rebuilding commenced. After Reconstruction ended in 1865,picayune grew steadily again as a commercial center with numerous businesses opening up around it. In 1924, Picayune was renamed Kingfisher after Hernando de Soto's exploratory expedition that reached Mississippi from Louisiana via Arkansas
