Picayune is a town located in Hancock County, Mississippi. The population was 6,205 at the 2000 census. It is the most populous city in Hancock County. The name of Picayune comes from an 1836 treaty between France and Great Britain which granted French settlers in what is now Picayune township access to the Yazoo River. In 1851, the General Jackson Administration established a post office at Picayune and named it for General Andrew Jackson. The first white settler in Picayune was James Witherspoon who arrived from Tennessee on October 3, 1836. He built a cabin on the banks of the Yazoo River and named his settlement for himself, "Picayune." By 1840, about seventy-five families had moved to Picayune from areas around Meridian and Vicksburg. In 1851, General Andrew Jackson established a post office at Picayune and named it for General Andrew Jackson. The first mail service through Picayune was conducted by boat downriver from Meridian to Vicksburg on July 1, 1852; this service ended when boats became too dangerous to navigate due to rapids near Natchez Landing. A citizens' meeting was held on January 7, 1853 to discuss ways of getting goods into or out of town by wagon or horseback transport; it decided that wagons should be used until better transportation options could be developed. On May 1st of that year, General John Cushing relieved General Jackson as commander of all Confederate forces within Louisiana after the Battle of Mansfield (October 14). After taking command of I Corps he advanced towards Alexandria but found that Confederate units were entrenched along both banks of the river south of Alexandria proper - Cushing's only hope would be crossing overland and reaching Baton Rouge before they could cut him off completely. On May 10th while exploring these strategic positions east of Alexandria Cushing discovered two small bridges spanning the river just beyond present day Missoula Cemetery & Racetrack Road: one across Lower Little Mississippi River called Banks Bridge & another crossed Poplar Street below present day US 71 called Griggs Ford Bridge - both crossings were unimportant because there was no route upriver short enough for cavalrymen & artillerymen travelling northward under cover of darkness with their supplies! For reasons still unknown today neither bridge has been restored or rebuilt as partorntially remains obsolete & unfit for vehicular traffic today; however its location (& presence) marks today's downtownPicayunes entrance onto Old Highway 92 which leads outwardly away from downtown picAYUNE
