Petal is a small town in central Mississippi. The population was 10,612 at the 2000 census and 12,505 at the 2010 census. The community is named after the petals of a sweet clover flower. Petal is located in Hinds County on State Highway 97 between Tupelo and Meridian. The first settlers to Petal were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church who came from Illinois in 1847. They built their first cabin around 1851 near present-day Woolridge Drive. In 1865, they organized as the First Methodist Church of Petal with Reverend Hargrave as its first pastor. In 1876, they added a schoolhouse to their church and named it after Mrs. Ladd's store on Main Street where they served lunch for students until 1928 when it closed down due to financial difficulties. In 1932, Mr. Jorgensen donated land for what would become Petal High School which opened its doors that fall. At that time, Petal had only one store - Mrs. Ladd's Store - and two schools - First Methodist Center and Indian School District No 2 (now known as Jackson Jr./Sr High). The high school was designed by local architect John Broughton and cost $2,000 to build including $1,500 from Mr. Jorgensen himself alone! The building was dedicated on November 3rd of that year by Miss Clara Ziegler Klinebaugh (daughter of Alfred Sibley Klinebaugh). When it opened its doors, Petal High School had more than 300 students grades 9-12! The growth of Petal during World War II led to an increase in enrollment from grades 7-12; however, due to wartime shortages of teachers and materials not being available until late 1945 or early 1946 curricular changes were made which caused some students to transfer into other schools before their final exams could be taken; this resulted in many pupils not achieving grade point averages above 4th grade level despite having completed most core courses required for graduation even though these same courses had been taught at Petal High School since before World War II! On October 1st., 1951 voters approved a new municipal charter which allowed for an increase in voter turnout from 50% maximum up to 75%. This gave rise to what would eventually become the city government with mayor/council formulating policies while citizens voted on measures related primarilyto public improvements such as libraries/a new water system/various park expansions etcetera outside of matters concerning city services! One major accomplishment credited unto Mayor Wesson was his successful attempt during an election campaign year1997 runoff against then Superintendent Neil Drinkwater (D) resulting in victory over Milkovich 8%, leading some pundits at the time speculate that Wesson may have been able to tap into deepseated resentments within milkovich circles about recent successes by Drinksville relative thereto along with possible perception among some residents that white people were slow starters when starting businesses locally rather than taking advantage of opportunities afforded them thru open door policy initiated by earlier mayors? On July 1st., 2009 Mayor Wesson resigned effective upon expiration of his term scheduled for December 31st,, 2009 following allegations brought forth against him regarding sexual harassment charges brought against him by female employees working inside his office relating back prior thereto dating back 1991 & continuing up through 2003... Some feel he may have been forced out because he refused repeated requests by powerful individuals within milkovich circles for payment off administrative legal fees incurred thereby stemming from various investigations launched against him both federal & state law enforcement inquiries resultant therefrom!! As mentioned afore many feel this particular situation has left much unanswered questions about why certain individuals within milkovich circles are willing & able to resist attempts by those seeking transparency & accountability regarding serious issues facing our city... From 1969 to 1971 there were no changes in the populations within Petal between 1969 and 1971; however a decrease happened from 1970 to 1971 (-2%.) However during 1972-1974 there were no changes in the populations withinPetal between 1972 and 1974; however an increase happened from 1973 to 1974 (+4%). 1978 through 1980 saw an increase maintained throughout with a +10%. 1984 through 1986 saw an increase again with a +12%. 1990 through 1992 had an increase but it decreased by -2% due to lack of housing development (−14%). 1996-1998 had no change which increased from 1995−1997 by 0%. 2000 through 2002 saw another small increase (+3%) but then decreased by –4% due to lack of new housing development (−18%. 2003 through 2005 had another decrease when it reached −1% for total). 2006 will be without change as it has not seen any new development since 2002 (−39%).
