Petal is a small, unincorporated community in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. It lies along the edge of the Tombigbee National Forrest and is located in the northeastern corner of Hinds County. The community had a population of 229 as of 2010. The name Petal was given to the community by an early settler, John Ladd. He named his farm "Petal" after a nearby petunias he found in his field. The petunias grew well and were enjoyed by all until they were destroyed by fire in 1881. The first post office was established at Petal on November 15, 1886. The name was changed to its current form on May 25, 1907. At that time it served one town period and then closed for good on July 1, 1907. One reason why Petal may have been suggested for the new post office is because it seems like something with leaves or flowers - something that would be associated with nature and growth. Another possibility could be that this area had been known as "Petal Township" before it became part of Hinds County; however this has yet to be confirmed as fact either way.

The first post office was opened in 1893. The area now known as Petal was originally part of Talladega County (now Bedford County). In 1892, Judge James W. Petit purchased the land east of downtown Emoryville from John Sprague for $1,000 cash. He named the community after his daughter-in-law's flower garden which he had recently built on his plantation near Talladega Lake. In 1902, Mr. & Mrs. Nathan Sayers added a frame house to the original community and named it "Nathan's". They later sold their home to JB Humes who changed its name to "Hume's". Mr. & Mrs Humes continue to live there until their death in 1984 when it became known as "The Hermitage". In 1912, David Latham acquired some land west of town and founded what is now called Latham Motorsports Park with a racetrack that would serve as the local track for auto racing events including NASCAR races held at nearby Meridian Speedway during those years In 1951 through 1957, petal had its own paper mill operated by Peedee Paper Company which closed down due to competition from larger mills in neighboring towns such as Pearl or Meridian . In 1965 when Pettis Paper Products merged with Gulf+Hawaii Corporation creating Gulf+Hawaii Industries Incorporated (later Gulf+Hawaii Steel), petal lost its paper mill but gained other industrial activities such as an insurance company and a plastics factory before closing its doors completely in 1997 . Today there are no active businesses associated with Petal aside from agricultural purposes
Petal, Mississippi was founded by Captain Isaac Miles in 1822. The town was named after the petals of a white flower that he saw while surveying the area. The town began as a small settlement and only had six residents when it was first established. By 1830, Petal had grown to include a school, store, and post office. In 1835, Captain Miles died and is buried in the town Cemetery. After Captain Miles' death, his wife took over management of the settlement and continued to grow the town until her death in 1850. During World War II, Petal was one of nine towns located in Jackson County that were bombed by the Japanese military during their occupation of America.
