The village of Petal was platted in 1881 by a group of farmers who wanted to name their community after the flowers that grew on their land. The town became known for its orchards and cotton fields, which remain the mainstay of the local economy today. Petal's history starts with the arrival of white men in 1883, when they built a log cabin on the edge of what is now Petal. By 1900, however, white settlement had ceased and the area reverted to Indian reservation land. In 1916, black soldiers from World War I landed at Port Arthur and marched through Petal to Food City before being deployed to Camp Butler outside of Mobile. As their replacements in the military grew scarce, many African Americans began working as laborers in nearby towns and cities. In 1927, after years of discrimination against African Americans living in southern Mississippi, state legislature passed a law that designated all Negroes within five miles of any major city as "Negro–owned." This measure effectively doubled the number of black people living within ten miles of Petal. The post-war boom period saw increased agricultural production throughout much of south Mississippi; however, it also led to social unrest among someoungs who felt left behind during wartime prosperity. In 1946, a group led by Elijah Muhammad organized an uprising against segregationist whites known as The Brotherhood Party (BP). The BP advanced integration goals but failed to gain popular support until 1955 when they successfully challenged segregated schools in Petal and other areas within south Memphis.
