GBAA donated $10,000 for construction of a courthouse and jail in Biloxi. The new courthouse was completed in 1913 and served as the first primary court house in Biloxi County until it burned down in 1951. In 1916,Captain John Petal died suddenly while serving with distinction during World War I and his widow took over running their business from then on until her death in 1948. Anna Petal continued to operate their store until her death also in 1948. Captain John's grandson William J Pettit continued to run Pettit Hardware until he passed away on July 21st 2006 aged 94 years old Major Gwinthorpe S Pettit took over running Pettit Hardware from him when Gwinthorpe passed away on December 9th 2006 aged 89 years old . On January 6th 2007 Little Rock businessman WV Harris announced he would be opening an auto body shop called Harris Auto Body & Glass located at 4235 Highway 97 West just east of downtown which will become home to many local businesses including petals hardware

Petal, Mississippi was founded in 1885 by African Americans. The town was originally called "New Petal" after the petals of a white flower. It is now known as "Petal". In the early 1800s, Petal was a small community located on the lower Mississippi river. Many black families from Baton Rouge and New Orleans migrated to Petal during the 1840s and 1850s in search of new opportunities. In 1885, when John Fisk purchased 1,000 acres (500 ha) of land near present-day Petal, he laid out a town square with two churches and twelve homes. A schoolhouse and clinic were also built in that year. The first post office opened in 1886, but it closed within one year because of lack of customers. The first store opened in 1888 and became the town's primary economic engine until 1925 when a hydroelectric plant began operating nearby and ruined the economy. In 1930, the U.S. Post Office moved to its current location at Third Street and Banks Avenue; however, it continued to serve as an important part of town life until 1971 when it closed for good due to budget cuts by then-Mayor Donnell Youngblood Jr.. In 1970, Mayor Youngblood Jr.'s administration initiated major renovation projects which transformed Petal into one of Mississippi's most vibrant communities; today it is one of its most diverse neighborhoods with more than fifty businesses including several banks and restaurants. During their time as mayors, Donnell Youngblood Jr., Edwin Edwards Sr., Nat King Cole III (Jr.), Clyde Thomas (1922-2007), Albert Chatman (1925-2008), James Weldon Johnson Sr., Vernon Jordan (1988-) have all been featured prominently in local history books published throughout the state capital city of Jacksonville; they are considered some of Mississippian's true pioneers who shaped our state into what it is today.
