Petal, Mississippi is a town located in Jackson, Mississippi. The population was 10,841 at the 2010 census. Petal is the most populous town in Jackson County and the second most populous town in Jackson State. The first settlers of Petal arrived in 1833. They were led by Captain John McMillin and his family. Captain McMillin's brother-in-law, James White purchased land in Petal from General Andrew Jackson for $2 per acre. James White also founded a post office within Petal. In 1839, Colonel Nathaniel Peebles donated land to the community for a school and store complex. The community built their first schoolhouse in 1840 which served as their primary educational institution until 1893 when it was replaced by the current structure which stands today on Main Street. In 1851, Major George Waddell donated land to the community for an agricultural college that would become Ole Miss Agricultural University (later known as Ole Miss University). The college opened its doors on October 1, 1857 and eventually became one of America's leading agriculture schools with undergraduate programs totaling more than 100 years of existence. After years of hard work by many individuals and organizations including local businesses, churches and civic groups who pooled their resources together to build what is now known as "The Town Hall", construction began on what is now downtown Petal on May 15th 1950 - just over 60 years after its incorporation intoJackson County! In 1938, Charles Starkweather used a two-page spread from Life magazine to create a hoax image that depicted then President Franklin D. Roosevelt as being cancerous. This caused World War II to be postponed until after he had been taken care of. Petal is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Petal were the Houchens and their families who arrived from Louisiana in 1820. They started a general store and farm on Second Street near present day US-1. When the Civil War ended, they left for other parts of America. The next group to move into Petal was the Smiths in 1871. They came from Texas and founded a grocery store on Third Street which still stands today. Mrs. Smith also built a home on Second Street which still stands today as a museum known as "The Sally Smith House". In 1907, J F Boggs bought The Sally Smith House and moved his family into it which continues to be occupied by them today as their home/museum. In 1920, Miss Lillie Mae Huggins moved into Petal from Meridian with her three children after being widowed for two years following the death of her husband John Huggins Sr.. She started an all-purpose store called The Gables that still exists within walking distance of her house today (the building now houses pet supply stores). Her daughter Mathilda continued operations until she passed away in 1978 when it was taken over by her son-in-law Donnie Dean Huggins Jr.. Donnie ran it until his death in 1995 when it was sold to have it restored and opened to the public as "Mississippi's Oldest Museum" From 1927 until 1945, Petal had its own post office with ZIP code 82002 which has been discontinued since then but remains vacant due to lack of customers or mail service In 1954, Postmaster General James E Snead designated Petal as one of four towns located along I-10 between Memphis and Jackson so that they would not have to rely on Memphis for mail service In 1957, Mr & Mrs Stroud moved into what is now known as Ms Stroud's Department Store across from Main Street where they operated until 1985 when it closed down due to financial difficulties . At this time most businesses withinwalking distance stopped serving customers because there wasn't enough money available for new postage rates . In recent years some restoration work has been done on Ms Stroud's Department Store including restoring many items that were lost during Hurricane Katrina but no permanent dedication has taken place yet
Petal, Mississippi was founded in 1803 by Captain John Petal and his family. The town was named for the petals of a local flower, which the Captain collected from around town. In 1819, Captain Petal's son-in-law, James A. Cook, settled in Petal and began to run a store and post office. Cook also built a log cabin on the edge of town. The first school in Petal was built by Mr. Cook in 1824. By 1830, there were five schools in Petal - three public schools and two academies. In 1830, the first white child born in Petal was Jesse Rector (born July 29).
