However, during World War II, Petal became a target of local discrimination because its residents were Japanese American nationals living in the area at the time. Despite this opposition, the town continued to grow throughout the war years and reached its peak population size by 1950. Afterward, however, petaling slowly declined as new businesses opened up in the area and most of the residents left for other parts of Jackson or Mississippi. In recent decades, however, petals has seen some resurgence following a campaign launched by local leaders to promote tourism in the town. This effort has helped make Petal an again an important stop on visitors' road trips through Jackson County
