In addition to hosting annual events such as rodeo competitions and carnivals, Petal also became known for its music scene which drew many young adults from nearby cities looking for an escape from their routines. During World War I, many local businesses went bankrupt due to lack of wartime production supplies; however, this didn't stop people from coming back to town during peacetime because there were plenty of opportunities available outside the military economy. However, economic woes would return during World War II when rationing stopped production at factories across America; this led to increased unemployment in downtown Petal and a rise in crime rates. In 1943, Mayor Fayette Dixon decided that enough was enough and announced plans for downtown development which would include housing units as well as businesses and services that could help make life more enjoyable for residents. This effort helped spur growth within downtown while providing new cultural attractions like thepetalsouthwaterfrontparkwhichopenedin1995andbecameoneofthemost popular tourist destinations in town.
