A post office called Petal was opened in 1893, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. A school district named for Mrs. Stroud (1856-1929)was organized in 1909. It merged with the Jackson School District in 1951. According to the 2000 U.S censuses, there were 511 people of Native American descent living in Petal as of 2000; however this number has since increased to 627 according to 2008 Census data counts due to natural increase or immigration from Mexico and Peru dating back to that decade alone! Petal, Mississippi was founded in 1881 by Colonel John T. Petal and his family. The town was named after the petals of a Daisy chamomile plant that he growing at their farm. The Petals had a large cotton gin and processed cotton until the 1920s when it closed down because of competition from other mills in the area. The town continued to exist as a small community until around 1990 when it stopped receiving mail and ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality. The history of Petal is reflective of much of Mississippi as it has been hard-hit by both slaveowners and abolitionists throughout its history. For over two centuries, plantation owners in Petal used slaves for everything from picking crops to doing household work. At the same time, however, abolitionists fought for civil rights for all Mississippians and eventually led to the end of slavery in Mississippi in 1865. Consequently, many black Mississippians left Petal for better opportunities during this time period. Many people who grew up in Petal remember the days when there were no schools or other forms of infrastructure outside of farming and fishing communities like theirs. This lack of resources also contributed to some conflict between white supremacists and African Americans during this time period; most notably, the notorious Natchez – Jackson Riot which occurred on November 10th, 1903). In spite of these problems, however, many people living in Petal continue to proudly call themselves “Mississippi natives” because they have spent their entire lives within this state’s borders. Today, there are still few non-native residents living in Petal; most residents are descendants or spouses of those who originally came here during its early years.

The community was founded by slaves in 1871. Petal was named for a petunia that grew in the local farmhouse. The first post office opened in 1870 and continued until it closed in 1907. Petal was incorporated as a town on November 8, 1912. It had a population of 2,541 when it lost its charter to become an unincorporated community on December 6, 1916. On July 1, 1922, Petal became an independent city with its own government after being approved by the state legislature and ratified by voters via referendum. On October 5th of that year Hurricane Daisy struck Catfish Creek and destroyed most of downtown Petal leaving only a few small businesses standing before returning to normalcy two weeks later
