Petal is a town in Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,298 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Gulfport–Biloxi–Mobile Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town started as a small settlement on the east bank of the Pearl River near its confluence with the Yazoo River. A post office was established in 1868, and by 1870 it had grown to include a store and two homes. The name Petal may be derived from "petun" or "petticoat." In 1878, settlers came to Petal from Hancock County and named it for their hometown in England. When petun ran out of supply in that year, some people began to grow corn instead. By 1901, when oil production began nearby, Petal had developed into an important center for local commerce and industry. In 1933, during World War II, Petal became one of many towns located along Interstate 15 in Gulfport–Biloxi–Mobile Bayou region threatened by air raids because they were unoccupied during the war's bombing campaign. At first residents refused to take shelter inside their homes; however, after assurances from military leaders that all civilians would be safe if they evacuated their communities (including Morristown), most decided to leave their homes voluntarily. Many businesses closed down due to lack of customers; however, several reopened after being re-opened by friends or family members who found new markets for products made in petal during the wartime period. After the war ended and gasoline prices increased dramatically due to rationing activities of the Truman administration (and also because muchofthe cotton crop had been destroyed during World War II), many petalsians returned home but few businesses reopened again once fuel prices stabilized again within a few years thereafter - probably because there were no new markets for products made outside petal during those years either outside or within Gulfport-Biloxi- Mobile Bayou region). In 1990s there has been an increase both number of people living here as well as businesses opening up due largely to fiber optic internet connection which has brought more jobs into this community than ever before! Other theories abound about why this particular geographic feature received its namesake from someone so interested in nature and plants - one suggests Pettigrew named his town after an old plantation where he grew up because of its proximity to two major plantations near Mobile Bayou; another theory suggests Pettigrew saw petunias growing wild near his home and decided to call his community after those flower varieties instead of just one word like most villages at that time did."
