In addition, several new restaurants and bars have opened up around town since then including Moochie's BBQ & Grill which replaced an aging gas station; The Dog House which reopened after being closed for over 25 years; Moon Pie Kitchen & Brewery which doubled as a homeless shelter before reopening as a restaurant; and WeHo Brewing Company which opened up shop inside an old schoolhouse on Main Street in downtown Petal just past Central Elementary School

In 1902, the pet trade was first organized in Petal when a group of men from Meridian formed the Mississippi State Canning and Storage Company to market canned goods sourced from local farmers. By 1916, the company had become known as Gulf States Canning Company. In 1928, Gulf States merged with other canners to form United Canning Companies, which remained active until its merger withStandard Brands in 1985. In 1938, during World War II, Petal became one of several towns in Mississippi to pledge their support for the war effort by producing food for military personnel stationed abroad. The town's participation led to its nickname "The Breadbasket of Mississippi."
