Pascagoula, Mississippi is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. It was founded by the Choctaw as an agricultural community on the banks of the Pascagoula River in 1824. The present-day city was named for a Spanish moss plant that grew plentifully near the river's edge. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Pascagoula in 1825 and built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the river. They traded goods with Indians and used their land to raise crops and sell animals. In 1830, they sold their land to John Rankin for $1,000 cash. He began trading goods with Indian traders and manufacturers upriver from his home in Biloxi before moving his business downstream to Pascagoula in 1833. Rankin's store became one of the most important businesses in town until it was destroyed by fire in 1839. He rebuilt his store and continued trading until his death in 1850.During Rankin's time, Pascagoula developed into an important commercial center with several stores, a cotton gin, warehouses and wharfage along the riverfront which served as meeting places for local merchants and farmers seeking cargo transportation acrossriver or downriver to marketplaces farther east or westward. In 1854 an act of Congress designated Pascagoula as seat of Jackson County under Act No 9 of that year; but no move had been made to establish it until 1861 when Benjamin Fenton became county treasurer following Reconstruction efforts following Andrew Johnson's administration becoming president on March 4th 1865 after Ulysses S Grant took office as secretary of war on April 14th 1865). On December 12th 1870 Jno Hogg appointed Dolphus Gibbs administrator for all public lands within easy access of Fort Payne (the newly established post at Yazoo City) within Jackson County...Gibbs organized traffic overland from various points eastward through Yazoo City to Mobile Bayou crossing at Red Bluff Ferry Landing thence upMobile River Valley past NP’s Plantation Point Landing thence down Mobile River Valley past Allatoonie Creek Bridge landing then due East along Mobile Riverbank past Fort Payne outpost prior to reaching its mouth about 8 miles below Pensacola Beach Florida
