In 1966, after passage of the Voting Rights Act, Pascagoula began to integrate into white society and today it remains one of few cities with black majorities that does not have racist ordinance or practices still legal or tolerated

Pascagoula, Mississippi is a town located in the northwestern corner of Jackson County, Mississippi, on the lowerMississippi River. The population was 11,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan statistical area. Pascagoula's history dates back to 1797 when French colonists founded a small trading post here named Pascagoula Bayou de la Glace. In 1814, after years of effort by General AndrewJackson and his forces against Native Americans in what is now Alabama and Tennessee, Pascagoula was given its current name - Pascagoula Bayou de la Glace - from then-Governor James K. Polk because it was within his borders as well as being near Mobile Bayou. The town started to grow rapidly during the late 19th century due to its natural resources such as timber and salt water fame for fishing. In 1892, lumber mill owner John Jankins donated land along the river for education and industrial purposes; this became known as Jankin Field Industrial Park which still operates today. By 1925, many businesses had been established in downtown Pascagoula including United States Rubber Company (USR), Gulf Oil Corporation (Gulf), Mid-Continent Electric Railway (MCER), American Tobacco Company (ATC) and other major companies that continue to operate in downtown Pascagoula today. During World War II many local manufacturers created munitions plants in or around downtown Pascagoula with employees working long hours non-stop until Victory in Europe was declared final seven weeks later on August 14th 1945! Afterward most factories closed but some continued production through 1946 before finally shutting down again during McCarthyism although some reopened under new ownership shortly thereafter! In recent decades Downtown business owners have worked together to create a revitalization plan called "PASCAGOULA REPUBLIC" which has included several initiatives such as repairing sidewalks throughout downtown; installing streetlights; restoring old brick buildings/ Idled businesses; developing an arts & culture district including galleries, art museums and musical venues; creating new jobs through job training programs; beautifying streetscape with vegetation removal/installation of benches/lawnmowers etc.; making city government more efficient through online tools like citizen input surveys etc.; increasing access to parks & open spaces across town while also hosting events such as music festivals etc.; keeping energy costs low by turning central heating into cooled air units instead of electric heating systems over time... Most recently there has been much discussion about redeveloping Pier Sixteen into a massive mixed use development project that would include office space along one side with residential units on another side overlooking the riverfront promenade which would be home to restaurants & bars facing both sides of SR 20 bridge acrossriver... these plans are currently being discussed between developers who own Pier Sixteen & City Hall officials
