The early settlers were primarily Baptist ministers who owned or rented land along the riverbanks to provide access to foodstuffs and water needed for their plantations south of Mobile Bayou. When cotton farming became popular in America during the 1830s, many African Americans began working on large cotton plantations near Mobile Bayou; however, they were not allowed to own property or vote until after Reconstruction ended in 1865 when racial segregation began nationwide. Consequently, many African Americans living in rural areas like Pascagoula did not have access to education or opportunities beyond agricultural jobs during Reconstruction period; this limited their ability to participate fully in American society until after World War II when they regained full civil rights through passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 Amendments . In 1855–1857 (the antebellum period), General James McMurtry's brigade participated in military operations against Fort Pillow operated by Gen Robert E Lee under Confederate command outside Memphis; this action helped precipitate Union victory at Chickamauga Ridge later that year which caused Confederate President Jefferson Davis to order his general Albert Sidney Johnston to march northward seeking an opportunity AGAIN TO CROSS THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER! Aftermath included 120 dead & over 1/3 million dollars expended on fortifications across nine counties!!! During Reconstruction era local black leaders such as Averett Hammond organized various educational institutions within their jurisdiction providing quality education for black children while also engaging community membersin activities such as spiritual warfare against white forces - thus uniting Afro-American communities both before and after emancipation -all while challenging social norms that discouraged intermarriage between Blacks & whites despite overwhelming economic advantages enjoyed by those individuals due largely to their birthright citizenship status quo!
