Pascagoula, Mississippi is a town in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,562 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by African Americans in 1859 as Pascagoula Landing. It became a white settlement in 1861. Pascagoula is the seat of Wilkinson County government and home to the county courthouse and district court. The first black settlers in Pascagoula were Obadiah Richardson and his family who arrived from Tennessee on July 10, 1859. Richardson's father had been born near Chattanooga, Georgia in 1795 and his mother died when he was only two years old. In 1827 Obadiah's paternal grandparents had come from Africa to live with their son Thomas Richardson Jr., who later changed his name to Obadiah after arriving in America. After landing at Pascagoula Landing on April 30 of that year, they built a cabin but left it unfinished because of lack of money. They decided to move into an existing frame house on Third Street which they moved into on May 1st (). In 1861 Confederate soldiers burned down the original cabin and replaced it with a new one which served as the county seat until 1865 when new buildings were erected by the county commissioners Building Company (). The current building was destroyed by fire on February 15th, 1938; part of its frame still stands today within view of the present courthouse complex (the other part has been demolished). On December 3rd 1890 Averill Fisk took delivery of what would become known as "The Ford" amphibious locomotive No 001 for use on local railroads between Memphis and Meridianville (). Passenger service ceased operations at Meridianville due to construction projects there however freight trains continued carrying passengers until 1957 when all passenger service ended except for occasional military train services.; In 1954–1955 three-month trial operation began callsign "Paschal" & featuring Deuce 'Dopey' Davis; lasted until 1955 night shift due to high winds proved too much for tender locomotives & temporary switchyard opened at Marshall Depot instead.. In 1966 regular daily scheduled passenger train service resumed using Class IHP Budd RailRails # 8362 running along State Road 82 east out of Marshall Depot until 1977 when track improvement work necessitated abandonment of this line; Rescued by SPEEDWAY volunteers during tornado outbreak that season.. New route: SR 82 west past Iron Works Junction then south through Dickson City before terminating just past US 131/SR 6 about north of where Route 5 used to be; now crossover point between these two routes
