The town was founded on November 6, 1839 by William Pemberton and named for its founder's ancestor, Pascagoula of the Mississippian culture. On October 15, 1865 Union General John C. Fremont laid siege to Pascagoula from the south after his failed attempt to march through Confederate-held territory north of Mobile Bay. After three days of bombardment and much bloodshed no one was taken prisoner but many supplies were destroyed or looted by Confederate forces who took advantage of the fact that Union troops had no horses to ride back across bayou St. Joe so they could loot nearby cotton plantations while their own horses were being ridden home).
