On December 14, 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered his army to cross the Mississippi River and march on Union-held Memphis. The battle of Pascagoula began just minutes after this order was given. At first, Confederate troops advanced cautiously towards Union forces in what is now known as the Battle of Three Forks. However, within minutes of their approach, Rebel cavalry charges attacked the Union line from three directions and routered it. This initial assault allowed Confederate infantry to drive into the Union ranks and overrun them entirely. The battle lasted for more than an hour and ended with a loss for both sides on both sides at least twenty killed, fifty-six wounded, and four captured prisoners. In total, about two hundred men were killed or missing in action during the engagement (the majority being Confederate troopers). The victory at Pascagoula helped lead to a strategic shift in Grant’s strategy; from an effort to retake Memphis outright to defending that city against any potential rebel attack while also besieging Atlanta.

Pascagoula, Mississippi is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi. It is the seat ofJackson County and was founded on October 16, 1819 by General Andrew Jackson as an agricultural community on the Yazoo River. The population of Pascagoula grew to over 36,000 by 1930. The city was named after the French town of La Paluña de la Gorgona in present-day Spain. The first English settlers in what is now Jackson County were Richard Covington and his brothers who arrived from Virginia in 1785. They built a cabin on the east side of the river about two miles (3 km) above present-day Pascagoula. In 1800, Captain James Fenton landed at Pascagoula with a party of sixty men from Mobile Bay and began trading goods with Indian traders. In 1810, Daniel Boone landed at this location with twenty men and soon established himself as one of the area's leading landowners and entrepreneurs. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson came downriver from Tennessee to establish himself as president of the United States after being elected as an unsuccessful candidate for Ulysses S. Grant’s Vice President position. He began settlement work in what is now Jackson County and ordered Colonel George Mosely to survey some new townships near La Grange so that they could be populated more quickly if necessary for military purposes or during construction projects desired by him or his successor John Quincy Adams Sr.. Colonel Mosely drew up a plat for what became known as Pascagoula which he submitted to Major General David Porterfield who had jurisdiction over allocating land grants within Jackson County On October 16th 1819,General Andrew Jackson issued a proclamation naming Pascagoula “the new place” where he would live until his death less than three months later on November 7th 1830 at age 63 years old – thus becoming America’s first president to die in office while still alive! After GeneralJackson’s death, another executive order was issued ordering all proceeds from sales of Cherokee lands eastward along the Alabama border given direct to Federal government coffers instead of going into private hands which created much resentment among many southeastern Cherokees living west of the Appalachians due to their long occupancy/useion rights there! As such it can be said that although America gained its independence following victory over Britain in both world wars through military action rather than peaceful negotiations (henceforth called World War II), our country also lost an amazing amount thereof due partially to greed and social injustice caused by people like Andrew Johnson & Samuel Tilden
