Oxford, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. It was founded in 1848 and was originally named Oxford after the University of Oxford, England. The town has been known for its cotton plantations, churches, and schools since it was founded. The town's first settlers were white farmers who moved from Tennessee to find land in what is now Jackson County. In 1849, the United States Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which allowed American Indians to be removed from their homes and lands in present-day Mississippi. The settlers in Oxford took advantage of this opportunity and quickly built up a large populated area around their plantation house. The first school in Oxford was established in 1851. After several years of operation, the school closed due to lack of funds. A new school was built on the same site in 1865 by local citizens under the leadership of Mr. John Witherspoon. The new school served as both an educational institution and a parish church until 1968 when it closed due to financial difficulties. Since then, only one building remains standing on campus – the Administration Building which served as the town's courthouse from 1951 until 1978 when it burned down during Hurricanema
