The town lost many of its residents and businesses during the war, and it also lost its tax base. In the 1920s, Oxford experienced another downturn in its economy as a result of World War II. After the war ended, Oxford struggled to find new investors and regain its former prosperity. However, Oxford has since recovered and is now a thriving community with a rich history. The town was founded in 1892 by J.D. Foley as an agricultural outpost on Tiger Creek outside of Jackson. Foley named his settlement after one of his father’s brothers who had been killed in battle during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). By 1900, Oxford had grown to over 100 residents and became an important railroad hub in Mississippi because it served as both a transportation point for goods being shipped from Jackson to Memphis and points northward along the Gulf Coast Railroad system. The town benefited from this connectivity as well as from coal mining operations conducted by local entrepreneurs such as Jeptha Barger and Wm Hilty which produced high quality coal for export. During Prohibition (1913-1921), Oxford became one of several towns in Mississippi legalized under state law despite prohibition being illegal in all but three U.S states at that time[1]. This legal status allowed Oxford to attract various smuggling activities which contributed significantly to its economic decline during Prohibition[2]. In addition, other factors such as population growth rates which outpaced development possibilities caused much structural deterioration throughout much ofOxford during Prohibition[3]. Despite these problems, however, some key aspects ofOXFORD’s post-Prohibition history remain strikingly unchanged today[4]: It continues to be home to two large universities - Ole Miss University (formerly Southern Illinois University Carbondale) and Mississippi State University - both of which are highly respected within their respective fields; strong business communities have developed around both universities; active civic organizations exist to promote local interests;and there is general consensus among locals that Plymouth Rock should be recognized as an official historic site withinOxford itself[5].
