Oxford, Mississippi is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 792 at the 2000 census. Oxford was founded in 1853 by Ole Hardeman and his wife Rachel. The first town meeting took place on December 5, 1853. The town plat was filed on January 6, 1854. Oxford was incorporated as a village on May 10, 1892. The population of Oxford peaked at 1,023 in 1960 but has since steadily declined to 792 as of the 2010 census. The first post office in Oxford was established on July 17, 1857 under the name "Fultondale". It closed on October 12, 1861 due to lack of mail volume. In 1862 the post office reopened under the name "Oxford". On November 2, 1865 two Indian men were killed while working for General Smith duringthe Battle of Tupelo Creek Bridge which helped lead to Union victory over Confederate forces at that battle known as "The bloodiest engagement of the war" In 1870-71 three new stores were built: A & W Grocery store (founded by Andrew White), J.B.'s Clothing Store (owned and operated by James Bigham) and Homan's Drug Store (owned and operated by Hiram Homan). Also in 1870-71 two schools were built: one for white children and one for black children; both schools closed circa 1970-1972 when all racially segregated public education ended in Mississippi following passage of Jim Crow laws . On October 15th 1890 a train carrying goods from Nashville derailed near Oxford leakage problems caused $2 million worth of damage to local homes including many rental properties valued at around $100 thousand each . This event is generally considered to be the beginning of what would become known as "The Great Railroad Robbery." With increased rail traffic arriving from Mobile Bayou Delta area an increasing number of people began to move from rural areas into towns such as Oxford where land prices were still relatively low relative to other northern cities during this time period . Many people who had originally resided near Athens or Meridian now found themselves living within reasonable walking distance either east or west of downtown Jacksonvillage despite trying very hard not to leave their homes during this time period because they saw various opportunities available outside city limits such as work on plantations or involvement with riverboat companies
