By 1840, Fort Dearborn had been built along US Highway 494 to protectStringer's cotton plantations downstream from Oxford during against Confederate raids into Mississippi Territory during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1861, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Ivory moved his brigade headquarters from Meridian to Oxford due to strategic location just south of Corinth Battlefield National Cemetery within easy driving distance of bothJacksonville and Mobile Bayou for campaign purposes; he also located artillery batteries there for protection against Confederate cavalry raids into Meridian Valley which passed through his command area en route back home to Cairo, Alabama. During Reconstruction (1868-1912), Oxfordsidentity grew outmoded because white Mississippians continued economic control over most aspects of local life while Black Mississippians struggled unsuccessfully to gain access education or employment opportunities not availableto whites alone even though they constituted nearly 60%of population by 1870."Oxford residents voted overwhelmingly for black Republican candidates statewide in all three elections between 1868-72 despite occasional attacks by Ku Klux Klan members who disrupted campaigns." In early 1915 when federal troops arrived MONROE COUNTY - including Oxfords main street - they burned all but one store building before moving away leaving few behind but many memories."
