It is the county seat of Jackson County and lies on the eastern edge of Jackson Parish. In 1830, Boone sold his interest in Athens Township to Lewis Stone; Stone renamed it "Oxford". In 1839, President Andrew Johnson moved from Nashville to Memphis so that he could be closer to Congressional duties; while he was away, Marble Hill Plantation caught fire and burned down killing eight people including six-time presidential candidate John Fisk (the only black resident of Memphis at that time). In 1840–41 Governor Thomas Hinds worked with merchants James Gadsden (founder of Gadsden City) and Amasa Walker (founder of Meridian) to obtain passage of the Act for Incorporating Jasper County which created new counties east of Tennessee River but did not include Lauderdale or Oxford because they were part of Mobile County then under Spanish jurisdiction. This act granted two thousand acres (two hundred hectares) within present day central Oxford Township" (from section 8vo., roll 975), northward along University Avenue pastpresent day Wallace Street towards Bullitt Road thence by Union Drive northeasterly thereto lying open tract boundeding by Highways 61 & 63 northerly intersecting said roads about midway between them thence northwestward flowing through said tracts into said township lying east thereof."
