The first Optical Instrument Shop was founded by three men in 1922- Hiram Bingham (owner), Franklin Dyson (manager), and Harry Kallmeyer (director). The shop was located on Perkins Avenue in Oxford. It was originally a small storefront with only two rooms. In 1969, the business moved to its current location on Union Street. The original owner, Hiram Bingham II, passed away in 1978 but his son continued to run the business until it closed its doors in 2000. Today, the store remains open as an online outpost with a selection of new and used optics products from around the world. In addition to providing customer service through their website and telephone line, they offer sales events throughout the year that include various demonstrations of new products as well as field trips to different parts of America for visitors to experience what it's like to sell optical merchandise at an actual optical factory!
