Oxford, Mississippi is a small town located in Harrison County, Mississippi. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. Oxford is home to the University of Mississippi and Ole Miss football team. The town also manufactures holsters, pistols and ammunition. Holsters were first developed as personal protection devices for farmers in the 1800s. In 1869, rifleman John Marshall patented the design for a shoulder holster that would protect a farmer's rifle from theft by another farmer or hunter. This holster became known as the "Marshall Holster." In 1906, Benjamin Banneker designed and patented an automatic pistol safety catch that prevented unauthorized access to firearms by individuals who did not possess appropriate credentials. This innovation led to the development of handguns as self-defense weapons and pistols as law enforcement tools. In 1911, Dragoons Armory began manufacturing revolvers under license from Colt Firearms Corporation in Smithfield, Kentucky. These pistols became known as "Dragoons". The Oxford Pistol Company was founded in 1928 by Willard Henson with the intention of producing quality handguns at an affordable price point for citizens of Oxfordshire County, Mississippi. Today, Oxford Pistol Company offers a wide variety of handgun models including revolvers (including 6 frame models), semi-automatic pistols (9mm Parabellum and .357 Magnum) and shotguns (12 gauge). It is part of the Oxford Metro area and sits on a bend in the Yazoo River. The town was founded by planters in 1833 and grew rapidly during the post-Civil War period due to its location, good soil, and access to cotton plantations. The town was major slave-holding center and most of its residents still identify as black. However, recent development has led to increased white Settlement in Oxford while maintaining some black community involvement. The history of Oxford begins with African Americans working on plantations near present day downtown Oxford. In 1833, Rev. John Morehouse organized a group of freedmen who set out from Hawkinsville for what would be their new home on Banks Peninsula opposite modern day University Park Boulevard/Highway 97A (now US 21). Because they were not allowed to hold land or own property themselves they had to borrow money from local planters in order to purchase their initial lot which they named "Oxford Landing". within months many Africans had purchased lots adjacent to where they now sit including those that later became known as "The Old Blackes". They built houses on these lands until about 1840 when white arrivals began arriving following Reconstruction which ended slavery in America Aftermath of Civil War In 1865, after Confederate General Robert Ewell's army destroyed all but one block of Jim Crow white neighborhoods including Oxford Landing it became necessary for African Americans living there to leave through various means such as boatloads departing daily for points northward along the Ohio River deltaboats known collectively as "The Dixie Fleet". Many African Americans took up arms against Confederate forces during this time period; however most left before hostilities ceased in 1865 largely because of economic conditions and lack thereof prospects for emancipation or retribution by Northern troops accompanying them into exile During Reconstruction many blacks continued living among whites although travel between races was difficult if not impossible given Southern hostility towards any sort of intermingling with European-American settlers . One result was an increase number of mixed-race children born into households where both parents were black. These children often experienced significant social isolation since few adults could reliably care for them without becoming involved with law enforcement or running afoul of plantation owners Eventually almost everyone who remained behind fled again following a series Of Creek Indian Wars that lastedfrom1870to1875 across much southern Alabama Oxfords first post office opened up shop just outside downtown on Green Street NW circa 1889 By 1900 only 7% remain Afro American with majority selfidentified White

Oxford was founded in 1869 by freedmen and their families who had fled to the area from Natchez, Louisiana. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Sabine River, its rich cotton culture, and its access to railroad lines that transported goods to Gulfport and New Orleans. In 1886, Oxford became a city when it incorporated as a result of an act of the State Legislature. The city saw rapid growth until World War II when it declined because of economic decline and military production in nearby Biloxi. Since then, Oxford has regained some of its former prosperity through business development and tourism. Oxfords history begins with enslaved Africans who were brought over from Africa in 1815 as part of what is known as The Second African Intrusion into America. For centuries they were worked off-farm by white landowners in what is now Jackson County until they were allowed to purchase their own land in 1867. With freedom came opportunity for upward mobility for many slaves who began working on farmssteads near where they lived while also attending school and learning English. By 1830 most black Mississippians living east of Meridian had left for Arkansas because there was no chance for them to gain education or employment opportunities similar to those enjoyed by white Mississippians west of Meridian. As slavery ended throughout much of America following the American Civil War, free black Mississippians found themselves scattered throughout the South with few guarantees for their rights or security beyond being mere tenants or laborers within their respective jurisdictions The first significant African American settlement in Oxford occurred shortly after Reconstruction Following General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 all Confederate officers except General James Longstreet were processed into Indian Territory under Article 8 section 3(a)of the 14th Amendment which stated "All men born or naturalized here [in Mississippi] are citizens thereof." This gave rise to speculation among some whites about whether all black Americans residing eastward within ten miles of Meridian would be considered residents or not since free blacks living westward weren't subject to this same rule Initially only men between 25-35 years old were granted citizenship which limited opportunities for advancement within society for these early pioneers In 1870 Allen Whitehead purchased 640 acres near present day downtown Oxford from John Witherspoon Morehouse Whitehead used his acreage as pastureland until he decided to erect a large cotton gin on his property in 1873 which became one ofOxford's earliest commercial enterprises In 1898 A&P grocery store opened adjacenttothe Cotton Gin Site making it one ofthe first shopping complexes west OfMilton Keynes . After World War IAA&P transitioned into J C Penney department store before becoming Sears Roebuck & Co . during World War IIOXFORD experienced another period Of Prosperity thanks To Its connection To Gulfport And New Orleans With Businesses such as Southern Airways , Alcoa Aluminum Company , Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae), Delta Air Lines Opened new businesses including Aiken Mills Mall And HartsfieldJackson International Airport
