The original gun range was located on what is now First Street and West Jackson Avenue. The range served as an armory and training ground for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After the war ended, the range became available for civilian use and remained in operation until it closed in 1973. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1821 as a trading post on the Natchez Trace River. In 1828, Wilkinson named the town after himself, making it his personal home from then on. The town continued to grow and develop until it reached its peak during World War II when it had a population of over 10,000 people. Following America's victory over slavery following the American Civil War (1861-1865), many freed slaves moved into or around Oxford where they began businesses such as grocery stores and restaurants . Over time this community slowly transitioned from an agricultural society into an urban one due to various factors such as improved transportation options and increased demand for goods production in Jackson County . This progress was halted however when railroads came along and began bringing industry northward , eventually causing joblessness among those same free black residents which exacerbated tensions within their own community . For some this led to violence while others simply chose notto integrate into local society altogether One reason why race relations became so complicated withinOxford was undoubtedly because African Americans did not have access either directly or indirectly to education or economic opportunity pre-war ; instead they relied heavily on their natural resources including landowning whites .
