The first national shooting championship was held in 1876 at Belle Isle Shooting Ground in Chicago by members of the United States Rifle Association (USRA). Oxford, Mississippi is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 3,488 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Oxford-Spalding Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1845 by Methodist missionaries from Tennessee and was named for Samuel Tolman, an American Presbyterian missionary who had been killed in India during the 1850s. In 1865, when Jackson County was created from parts of Lauderdale and Pike counties, Tolman's hometown became Oxford. It has since grown to become one of the most significant towns in Jackson County. Today, Oxford is a vibrant community that offers a wide variety of cultural experiences including arts and music venues such as The Parish and its sister institution First Baptist Church; restaurants such as Fifth Street Cafe and Grandma's BBQ; bars like The Basement Lounge; and homes which can be found throughout downtown along with several parks including Presidential Park on River Road across from the courthouse. While it may not have quite as much notoriety as some other regional towns (such as Memphis or Jackson), Oxford remains an important center for culture inJackson County thanks to its abundant historic resources dating back to pre-Civil War times.

In 1903, another new magazine called The World’s Fair Issue came out which lasted for almost 10 years. During this time period, there were many famous massacres where people died because they had too much ammunition on their guns. Oxford, Mississippi is a small town in the southwestern corner of Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County and home to Oxford High School and Oxford-Mauldin Community College. The town was founded by John Wilkinson in 1892. Oxford is located on State Routes 41 and 334. The community lies east of US Highway 71 (US 71), north of US Highway 421 (US 421), west of US Highway 85 (US 85), and south of I-20 (I-20). The community's name comes from an incident that took place there on October 10, 1892 when John Wilkinson married his wife, Sarah Goode, at a Methodist church in Oxford. Sarah's parents had moved to Oxford from Meridianville, Alabama after her father died young. At the time of their wedding, Wilkinson and Goode were living in Meridianville with their two children: John Jr., age 8 months; and Sarah Goode Jr., age 2 years old. Wilkinson first settled in what is now known as the Townships of Princeton and Monroe before moving to Oxford proper in 1892. He built a log cabin near present-day First Street and Main Avenue for himself and his family. By 1903, he had composed a plat for what would become known as "the Square." That same year saw the opening of the first post office in town - called "Old Stone House" because it stood on Old Stone Road just east of First Street - which served residents until 1957 when postal service was discontinued there due to budget cuts announced by then Governor Ross Barnett. As early as 1895, cotton farmers had begun settling down around what became known as "The Square". A group led by Jeptha Newton formed a subscription club to purchase land southeast of town where they would build Industry Station which eventually became one of Jackson County's largest cotton plantations. In 1898 construction began on Wagon Wheel Plantation north side OF First Street between Crain Boulevard & Cotton Drive; this plantation soon became Taylor Farms Incorporated with over 100 acres leased/owned/leased again within its first decade! After losing much acreage due to weathering during World War I & II (& becoming unprofitable)many portions were sold off thru various land acquisitions including most notably Central Park Place circa 1946! Many current sqares streets names originated from these purchases or have since been restored back into status quo antecedents...amongst others are: Postoffice Row:Originally named “Old Stone House” prior thereto; Address later changed to Main Avenue; White Sulphur Springs Rd.:Original name givenDriveway & Other Streets Named For Former Plantations Or Land Acquisitions Included Russell Ave.:Original Name givenTo Mr./Mrs./Child Of Mrs.(?)
