Oxford was founded by African Americans in 1871 as a planter's town on the east bank of the Yazoo River. The name "Oxford" comes from an old English word meaning "a good place to plant crops." The first white settlers were men named John and James Barron who arrived in 1870. They built a cabin and started trading with Native American nations for goods they needed for their own settlements. In 1872, George Washington Bain purchased 4 acres (1 km²) of land on the east bank of the Yazoo River from John Barron and began building what would become known as Bain's Landing on what is now Main Street. He later renamed it Oxford after his home country, England. In 1876, Oxford became one of five townships within Forrest County when it was organized into that county. The following year saw its first election when William Humes won an open seat in the state House of Representatives from Memphis Township. At that time, only male citizens could vote in Forrest County elections and local officials appointed by the governor did not have power over township matters or school board membership. In 1902, Oxford experienced its first tornado when one touched down near main street just south of downtown and destroyed several homes before residents managed to get out safely. A second tornado struck Oxford on July 21st 1931 killing three people and injuring dozens more including many women and children who were sheltering in barns or other buildings during this severe weather event which also caused extensive damage to businesses throughout central Oxfordtown including many stores that still stand today! On January 1st 1935, Auburn Samuels became President of Forrest County after being elected Governor of Mississippi unopposed by any major party candidates due to term limits set by then-Governor Orville Shelby at the time! On February 3rd 1935 during World War II (1939-1945), France Page served as U S Army Air Forces Sergeant Major Commanding Squadron One Hundred Thirty-One (SgtMaj 101), flying aircraft from Jackson Municipal Airport located about five miles west of city limits near present day Bryant University where he flew missions over Normandy Beach attacking enemy targets! After flying his last combat mission over Normandy on June 8th 1945 SgtMaj Page returned home to Jackson Municipal Airport where he sat out all together until September 25th 1945 when he finally retired from military service becoming oldest active duty officer ever with USAF! Although no longer serving with USAAF SgtMaj Page remainsrecognized as one hundred thirty-one (SgtMaj 101) greatest airman ever cytically & spatially through various means(See: USAF WWII Flight Historian website). During much of World War IIOxford had few economic opportunities because cotton production was based almost exclusively within Forrest County while most other states were experiencing heavy war draft calls; however some blacksmiths opened up shop around this time doing work such as repairing artillery pieces exported overseas like tanks or M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles while others worked odd jobs like selling eggs door to door or pickingeting local factories making munitions necessary for Allied war efforts such as Spitfires & Hurricanes
In 1874, Oxford was founded by General John C. Frémont and his wife Julia as a post-office on the banks of the Yazoo River. The town quickly prospered due to its ample water supplies and fertile soil. By 1881, it had a population of 775 residents. In 1907, the United States Postal Service merged with the railroad company Southern Pacific and Oxford became part of SP’s Memphis Division. The railroad left in 1960, but the community continued to thrive until around 2000 when it experienced significant economic decline due to decreasing passenger traffic and an increased focus on email and other online services.
