On July 15, 1863 Union General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House thus ending the war in America; however, Oxford continued to be under Confederate rule until 1865 when it reverted back to Union control following General Robert Ewell's March 15 victory over Confederate forces at Battle of Chickamauga Creek which ended their resistance againstUnion power within central Alabama

Oxford, Mississippi is a small town in the Jackson County, Mississippi area. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census. Oxford is part of the Gulf Coast region and its economy is agricultural. The name "Oxford" comes from an early English settler who named his farm "Oxford." The first reference to Oxford in local history can be traced back to 1837 when a group of men from Natchez came to work on a cotton plantation near Oxford. One of these men, John Denton, mentioned Oxford in his journal as one of five places he visited along the French Broad River. In 1839, Captured by Confederate forces during the Civil War and held as a prisoner at Vicksburg until 1863, Samuel Goldsborough wrote about life in Johnson County while living near Corinth. According to Goldsborough's account, there were two villages in that area: Oxfordsville (now known as Meridian) and Oxford proper. The first post office was established in 1846 and remained open until 1888. It was located on present-day US Highway 61 north of downtown Oxford. The first school inOxford was built on what is now old US Highway 61A just west of Main Street in 1867; it served grades one through eight with four teachers andstood until 1906 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by windthrowers employed by nearby farmers. In 1886, three white European women – Mrs. Laddie Foard (1847-1925), Mrs. Cuthbert Sayers (1850-1929) and Miss Frances Webb (1851-1920) – founded Ole Miss Female Normal School which became one of America's leading female colleges after teaching classes at nearby Tuskegee University for thirty years beginning in 1888 before moving their operations to Lexington, Alabama following World War II In 1915 Drury Gillespie donated $10,000 towards construction of what would become Ole Miss' current football stadium which opened in 1920; that year also saw the establishment of the university's athletic department . . . From 1926 until its closure during WWII as an all black college under federal patronage called ALUMNI FALLacy College Inc., Brown University sharedOXFORD's campus ..... After World War IIOXFORD experienced significant growth with merchants locating within blocks away from downtown such as Marts Clothing Company & Biltmore Pharmacy .... Post Office moved location 3 times over 40 years including 10th St NW then 2nd Ave SW then 1st Ave NE before being relocated again 6th Cir NW .... As recently as 2000 most residents still resided Downtown & only 7% reside currently outside Downtown
