Oxford, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,917 at the 2010 census. Oxford is situated on the banks of the Yazoo River and is east of Jackson. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The first European to visit Oxford was Captain John Smith in 1692. The town name was derived from Old French "Oiseaux" (cf. English "ox"), meaning "place where oxen are pastured." By 1810, Oxford had a Baptist church and two stores. A cotton gin was built in 1824 and became known as "the best in America." In 1840, 440 acres (175 hectares) were donated by James Fenton to develop into what is nowOxford Township.
