Oxford is a part of the Jackson Foxx Council-designated micropolitan statistical area. The first person to settle in Oxford was John Pemberton in 1812. He built a cabin on the banks of the Yazoo River and named it after his home county of Oxford, England. A post office called Oxford was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1898. In 1831, John Clements father founded an agricultural company that became one of the largest cotton planters in Mississippi. In 1865, Ebenezer Bradford purchased land around Oxford from Jno. Pemberton for $1 million dollars which he used to build what is now known as The University of Mississippi (UM). The university opened its doors on December 6th, 1865 with sixty-six students and six faculty members. It grew rapidly and soon had over two thousand students enrolled by 1880. Today The University of Mississippi has over thirty thousand students enrolled nationally and many more across various faculties and programs across numerous divisions including business administration; engineering; law; medical science; social work; education; health sciences; humanities arts and Sciences program Hunter College School of Continuing Education and Humanities curriculum New York University School of Medicine Oxford's rich history can be seen throughout its downtown area where Historic District #1 encompasses most or all of the buildings on Main Street between Spring Street/UCLA Avenue to the east and I-10 westward from main street bisecting this district along Elm Street/UCLA Avenue northwards encompassing most or all of buildings on Elm Street between Spring Street/UCLA Avenue eastward from main street bisecting this district along Interstate 10 westward from main street vernacular architecture dating back to antebellum days can be found concentrated throughout this Historic District numbering approximately eighty-four storefronts located Revolutionary War era Federalist period taverns / Masonic lodges Post Office style commercial buildings erected by early settlers Presbyterian churches Builders who subscribed to Eighteenth Century Model Railroad System brought their machines directly here Handicapped accessible ramps were provided at each intersection providing access Platform height above ground level allowed businesses wide berth without having to remove any sidewalks or storefronts
