Oxford, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town was named after Oxford, England and first settled in 1872 by Englishmen who had come to work on the railroad. It became an incorporated municipality in 1907. The town has a rich history dating back to when it was near Jacksonville, Florida. The people of Oxford were friendly with the people of Jacksonville and some of their items still today are found there such as wagon parts and other tools used by early settlers. In 1872, two Englishmen named John Waddington and David Griffiths founded a ranch in what is now Oxford. They took out a $3,000 loan from J&P Railroad President James Giddings to start the ranch which would eventually encompass 422 acres (160 hectares). In addition to farming land there were also forests that were cut down for lumbering purposes early on in Oxford's history. It wasn't until after World War II that most heavy industry moved intoOxford because of its proximity to Gulfport and Mobile Bay oil fields- however, auto production did continue until 1964 here at nearby Battle Creek Assembly Plant (now Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). During this time many local businesses closed due to lack of customers or competition from larger companies outside of Oxford proper- one example being Fawcett's grocery store which operated continuously until 1978 when it closed because it could not compete with larger stores east of I-10 along US 90/ flashing "No new orders please" signs all around its doorways.). A few memorable places from this time include "The Ruby Room", which served as headquarters for then Mayor Willis Matthews during his term; The old post office where mail was delivered before arriving at City Hall; Mrs. Beasley's Bakery where everyone got their morning coffee; Joe Biden's houseboat on Lake Pontchartrain; and Old Ford High School which housed both high school football games as well as classes for students attending nearby Corinthian Colleges between 1958-1962'. Today only fragments remain from these former businesses including windowsills relicensing cards bearing individual student IDs dated 1958-1962 that can be found inside Old Ford Library (.pdf file). In 1957 Community Action Council (CAC) was formed within the city limits with the goal "…to provide programs designed specifically to help low income citizens." CAC quickly became known for their food pantry program (which currently provides groceries assistance to over 2200 residents) as well as providing lawn care services free of charge through donation drives throughout the summer months..
