On October 3rd 1870 African American male students were admitted for the first time to Ole Miss following passage of Act No. 1097 which granted voting rights to black Mississippians living within state lines; this event also signaled formal beginning of Reconstruction Era in America which ended seventy years later with Brown v Boardman decision (1974). The city's economy changed rapidly due largely to cotton production beginning in the early 1800s until it peaked around 1915 when World War I curtailed demand for cotton exports but didn't cause any major decline in overall economic activity according observers such as historian Don Easley: "It should not be forgotten that between 1915 and 1925 something like three-quarters of all total dollar value produced in Hinds County came from manufacturing."
